6d. Unit Facilities

6d.1. How adequate are unit--classrooms, faculty offices, library/media center, the technology infrastructure, and school facilities--to support teaching and learning? [Describe facilities on the main campus as well as the facilities at off-campus sites if they exist.]

The College of Education and Human Development is mostly housed in Strauss Hall located near the campus library and was constructed in 1974 and is in good physical condition. Housed in this building are: Educational Leadership and Counseling (School Counseling and Substance Abuse Counseling), Curriculum and Instruction, and Psychology (Clinical Psychology and School Psychology), the majority of faculty offices, classrooms, and CEHD administration. As student safety is of utmost importance to the unit and university, fire evacuation plans and telephones are available in case of an emergency.

Fant-Ewing Coliseum houses the Department of Kinesiology. (Exhibit 6d1.5 Fant-Ewing Coliseum Floor Plans and Pictures) Additional vital teaching areas include: Oxford Natatorium, Groseclose Track Stadium, Weight Room, Student Activity Center and Heard Tennis Stadium. (Exhibit 6d1.6 Additional Teaching Resources Department of Kinesiology) The department also has a Student Resource Room with current texts, journal, and items of interest from each faculty member that are for supplemental instruction. The Human Performance Lab (Exhibit 6d1.7 Kinesiology Human Performance Lab Facilities) is a comprehensive facility that includes metabolic and cardiovascular testing capabilities, body composition measurement devices (including hydrostatic weighing), health related fitness testing, and motor learning equipment.

The unit has 10 Smart Classrooms between the two facilities. Five computer labs that are open to candidates for use, 4 located in Strauss Hall and 1 in Fant-Ewing Coliseum, containing16-24 Dell computers all within three years old. The ULM Doctoral Lab, in Strauss Hall, was designed specifically for the LEC to hold small classes and meetings, for candidates to interact and collaborate on research projects, and for special presentations such as the defense of proposals or dissertations. The Region VIII Teaching, Learning and Technology Center is also located in Strauss Hall and is a Board of Regents’ unique Center of Excellence. TLTC is designed to train in-service teachers and administrators in techniques to enhance their curricula through technology. Additional facilities available to the CEHD are 3 Professional Development Schools located close enough to ULM to present easy and fast access to candidates. (Exhibit 6d1.8 Professional Development Schools) ULM has an excellent working relationship with P-12 schools in a 15-parish region, offering candidates opportunities for action research, authentic learning experiences, meaningful practice, student teaching, and internships. Regional Center for the Louisiana Systemic Initiative; Louisiana School Facilities Institute; ULM Community Counseling Center; Marriage and Family Therapy Center and Clinic.
